Our Story

Who we are

Consisting of a close-knit team in the historic port region of Leith in Edinburgh, we work with creative partners all over the world to produce collections that are made to last, affordable and sustainable. Every product is thoughtfully designed and crafted, with each order handled personally and with care.

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much"

Helen Keller

What We do

Working collaboratively with artisans in Morocco, India, Kenya and Türkiye we produce timeless collections of beautiful, functional objects. Gaining a deep understanding of the techniques and processes of each craft is fundamental to our design process and we spend many many hours in the company of our partners quietly observing in awe of their skills.

Our role is to act as a bridge between traditional crafting communities and an audience who value authentic goods sustainably produced. With a designer's eye and over 25 years of experience in this field, we work together with makers to update patterns and forms, introduce contemporary colour palettes, and focus on the finer details to create a fusion between age-old tradition and modernity.

Our Philosophy

At Bohemia, we place great value in the handmade; perfectly imperfect wares crafted slowly from natural materials that are locally sourced. Goods made by hand bear the character of their creator with the nuances and eccentricities integral to each piece. We yearn for meaning in our lives, and the connection felt in owning a unique item made using centuries old techniques by an individual human being has increasing value in our fast-paced world.

As a company, our aim is to champion the status of artisanal craft and those who produce it. We believe in fair trade and our relationships are built on trust, respect, equality and friendship. In Marrakech we have established our own workshops to improve the living and working conditions of our partners. We aim to provide beautifully made, hand-crafted objects that are ethical, authentic, and sustainable.

A Note From Our Founder

Craft touches something deep within us and in many cultures is a communal activity, more than fashioning purely utilitarian objects, it is a way for us to express our joys and heartbreaks.

My life has been dedicated to working with artisans and craftspeople, a journey that has taken me all over the world, experiencing many adventures, and learning from the artisans I spend so much of my time with.

There are challenges in this line of work, but I feel incredibly privileged to be able to immerse myself in the countries I love, living and working with local people in their homes and studios. The patience and kindness of the artisans I sit with continues to be my greatest guide and most humbling joy.
